Myrrh is a gum-resin extracted from a number of small, thorny tree species of the genus Commiphora. When a tree’s wound penetrates through the bark and into the sapwood, the tree bleeds a resin. Myrrh gum, like frankincense, is such a resin. This tree is native to parts of Saudi Arabia, Oman, Yemen, Somalia, Eritrea and eastern Ethiopia. Myrrh resin has been used throughout history as a perfume, incense and medicine. Myrrh is a unique scent and signals a fragrance from the Orient.
